An impressive saga has transformed the Roman House into a master of ultra-thin mechanical watches. In just a few years, the brand has been setting one record after another regarding the thickness of the case. A series of ultra-thin record\u2014breaking watches was awarded the Golden Arrow, the main prize of the 2021 Geneva Grand Prix of Watchmaking, awarded to Octo Finissimo watches with perpetual calendar. But Finissimo cannot be reduced to a technical feat. In a class of its own, the collection also embodies elegant, revolutionary Italian design. However, Bulgari lacked one record to become the undisputed master of ultrathin products. And since all good sagas need a climax, it’s time to discover the stunning Octo Finissimo Ultra and its slim 1.8mm profile.<\/p>\n

In the search for Bulgari, one record was missing \u2014 the thinnest mechanical watch that would surpass the Piaget Altiplano Ultimate Concept. Back in 2018, Piaget broke the record previously set by Jaeger-LeCoultre (3.6 mm), releasing an incredibly thin watch with a thickness of 2 mm. But Bulgari has gone even further from the mark. The 1.8mm thick Octo Finissimo Ultra watch has become the thinnest mechanical watch ever made in the world. They are 10% thinner than the Piaget Altiplano Ultimate Concept, which is an unattainable result.<\/p>\n

Bulgari Octo Finissimo Ultra<\/strong> is the thinnest mechanical watch in the world. To achieve this exceptional result, Bulgari took at least three years of development, which teamed up with the designer and manufacturer of Concepto mechanisms in La Chaux-de-Fonds. In terms of design, the Octo Finissimo Ultra retains all the codes of the collection thanks to its signature matte monochrome gray color. The watch is supplied in a 40 mm case with a built-in bracelet with an “invisible” folding clasp corresponding to the thinness of the case.<\/p>\n

The mechanism’s layout also follows the standard model of the collection, with two separate counters for hours and minutes, and seconds displayed directly on the fourth wheel at 6 o’clock. The watch seems almost surreal. The movement on the dial creates a certain sense of depth, its profile is really incredibly thin.<\/p>\n

Such a technical achievement requires expanding the limits of ultra-fine manufacturing, cutting components to the limits of feasibility, and working with the most extreme tolerances. It also requires thinking outside the box with a complete reengineering of all watches, rethinking each component, its architecture and functions.<\/p>\n

That is why Fabrizio Buonamassa Stigliani, executive director of product development at Bulgari, states that “the challenge of this eighth record was the most difficult to overcome, as we had to break the rules not only in terms of mechanism design, but also the body. To achieve this degree of subtlety, you not only need to rethink your way of thinking, but also use a wide range of skills, play with multiple materials, and adapt to a multitude of new constraints. In this sense, Octo Finissimo Ultra is undoubtedly the ultimate complication in this vast field of possibilities presented by ultraminiaturization.”<\/p>\n

As with the Piaget Altiplano Ultimate Concept, the back cover also serves as the base plate of the mechanism. However, the Piaget body\/mechanism was a complete component, which is not the case here. Indeed, the back cover and the middle of the Bulgari Octo Finissimo Ultra case are connected together. The bezel is screwed to the back of the watch. As for the material, the middle part of the case and the bezel are made of sandblasted titanium, and the back cover and main plate are made of heavy-duty tungsten carbide, especially a hard and heavy-duty carbon and tungsten alloy to ensure overall rigidity.<\/p>\n

Ultra-thin glass (0.30 mm) is glued to the bezel. It is supported by two silicon pads mounted on screws (visible on the periphery of the case for about 3 and 6 hours) to maintain all functions in the event of an impact.<\/p>\n

The idea is to avoid using different layers in the architecture of the watch, taking advantage of the entire surface of the watch, rebuilding and lining up all the functions in one horizontal plane.<\/p>\n

From this point of view, the functions and design of the various components had to be completely rethought. One of the starting points was the use of a regulator-type dial with separate time indication. Naturally, this allowed Bulgari to avoid using overhead hands to make the watch thinner. And in terms of style, they created an 8-shaped dial (suitable for the Octo collection) with a clock and minute indication.<\/p>\n

With the idea of building functions in a single horizontal plane, a standard crown for winding and tuning watches could not be used in such a thin watch. Bvlgari chose two horizontal knobs located on the sides of the case \u2014 one for the factory and the other for setting the time. Each has a ratchet wheel that allows you to wind up the mechanism and set the time in only one direction. The factory handle is not protected, and the time setting knob is located between two protective covers to avoid unintentional actuation. In addition, the small click wheel prevents reverse rotation, and therefore requires a certain amount of effort to operate the mechanism. The differential gear mechanism is used to set the time without disturbing the gear train.<\/p>\n

The ratchet wheel of the drum is so thin that the engraving of the QR code pattern on its surface required additional engraving on the other side to avoid deformation.<\/p>\n
