Cartier Clash [Un]limited Mitten

Cartier, a master of creating often extravagant and sometimes bizarre watches decorated with precious stones, presents Mitten watches. Despite its simple name, the Mitten watch is a spectacular combination of an antique oval watch case Baignoire Allongée and a braided rose gold glove decorated with over 1,500 diamonds.

The Mitten Watch is the first unique Clash [Un] limited wristwatch in the Clash line of stylish jewelry. Clash [Un] limited is a step forward in exclusivity and creativity. This is a collection of watches and jewelry, consisting entirely of limited editions or unique creations.

Unsurprisingly, watches in the form of jewelry are a feature of Cartier. Past examples include a clock in the shape of an overflowing bathtub, inspired by animals, and, of course, the famous Crash. But still, the Mitten Watch manages to stand out – it’s a very special creation.

The metal half glove certainly makes the watch interesting both in shape and function. The Baignoire Allongée – in French, “elongated bathtub” – is perhaps the perfect choice for a design with its elongated but thin profile, which is noticeable enough to be visible, but smooth enough not to be conspicuous against the background of a mesh glove.

And then there are the diamonds that cascade out of the watch, giving the mitten a dynamic look that will no doubt sparkle brightly in the light. Being a unique piece of art, the Mitten Watch will undoubtedly have an exorbitant price tag.

According to Cartier, the Mitten Watch was created over the course of two years as a result of a collaboration between the French glove manufacturer and Maison des Métiers d’art, a workshop specializing in handicrafts located in the Swiss town of La Chaux-de-Fonds.

The result is an elastic glove that fits snugly around the palm and wrist. In fact, it is a single-layer mesh consisting of tiny square pieces of solid rose gold, painstakingly assembled by a craftsman using modern tools such as laser welding and surgical pliers.

In addition, about 1,600 diamonds adorn the glove and the watch. The dial is studded with diamonds, and the Baignoire case is surrounded by diamonds forming a radiant “constellation” – the brand’s term for a diffused frame. According to Cartier, the entire watch creation process took 227 hours.

The Baignoire watch inside the Mitten is not new, the base model was introduced two years ago. Now it is more carefully adjusted to easily fit into the golden grid. Instead of the usual crown in the “three” position, the crown moves to the back of the case, leaving a seamless border between the case and the glove.
