Richard Mille RM 16-02 in Terracotta quartz TPT

The RM 16 model is a veteran of the Richard Mille catalog, first released in 2007. It was the brand’s first rectangular watch. Richard Mille has released two new versions of RM 16, RM 16-02, available in a titanium case, and a brand new TPT quartz in a terracotta case. This shade, which lives up to its name, is a rich, warm red obtained by layering 45 micron diameter silicon filaments at a 45 degree angle in a color matrix, which is then heated, pressurized, milled, and finally mounted on top of a creamy white body.

The titanium model is more traditional, with polished, satin and micro—jet finishes. Both versions have dimensions of 36 x 45.6 x 9.5 mm, which is smaller than the size of the 2007 original. In addition, the case has been slightly redesigned to significantly improve the ergonomics on the wrist.

The CRMA9 Calibre is installed inside the case, a brand new 15th member of the brand’s family of internal mechanisms. Although the overall look and feel are very much in line with the RM spirit. The most interesting thing about this mechanism is its foundation. Richard Mille has put a lot of effort into creating an open, labyrinthine titanium base that emphasizes the rectangular shape of the case, maximizing the amount of light in the mechanism. The sapphire dial is located on top of the base. It is shaped to follow the geometry of the base, repeating the twists and turns of its architecture. There are a total of 67 beveled holes on the base, each of which requires two hours of precise milling, and this is not counting the other finishes that combine to create an incredible look for the new mechanism.

Richard Mille engineers have created a completely new silhouette for the rotor, made of platinum and equipped with two Class 5 titanium inertial blocks. The bi-directional rotor is mounted on ceramic ball bearings for an optimized factory 50-hour power reserve.

Another optical innovation of the RM 16-02 Automatic Extraflat is the hour markers. They look like a threadlike sticker that seems to weave through a maze of machinery. Richard Mille RM 16-02 looks good on both men’s and women’s wrists, and the color palette is modern and discreet.
